Set at the turn of the twentieth century, 10-year-old Mary Lennox lives in India with her aloof and neglectful parents. After she is unexpectedly orphaned, Mary is sent to her uncle's home where she is put under the care of the strict Mrs Medlock. Despite being a sullen child, Mary finds pleasure in exploring the house and grounds. She befriends Dickon, a boy who is good with animals and gardening, and when the two of them discover a mysterious locked door, they work together to bring the garden behind it back to life.
One night, Mary hears a cry and meets her cousin Colin, a sickly child who has never been outside of the house. Along with Dickon, Mary and Colin discover the healing power of the garden.
