For young girls, being raised Christian this means hearing about women whose highest achievements largely include being wives and mothers. It means learning lessons about avoiding temptation, not being a stumbling block, keeping yourself pure, and being a model of piety. And that means often feeling like a failure, thinking marriage and motherhood is the ultimate prize, and for many, ultimately leaving the church dejected yet empowered.
In this new one-woman show, Sarah retells the story of several Biblical women - Tamar, Ruth, Bathsheba and Sarah - looking for what they have to say to us today.
SYNOPSIS
Tamara longs for marriage but finds herself being constantly turned away until she feels like she has to go after what she wants with everything she's got. What a surprise to find it does not live up to all she has been promised. Ruby has limited interest in relationships but her friends urge her to find a husband before it's "too late". While the man she marries is nice enough, Ruby finds the experience miserable. Bethany is seduced and courted by her pastor, and finds herself wondering how she could have ended up in such an unhappy state. Finally, Sarah just wants to have a family, but a ten year long battle with fertility casts doubt over her marriage and her sense of purpose.
Through these stories comes a rejection of expectations and a reexamining of the tales we were told growing up.
It is so utterly refreshing to attend a new, original theatre work by a performer you don’t know, and to be won over by their writing, delivery, and presence.
With witty, comic references to her own upbringing the performer really warms to the intimate storytelling style, ingeniously weaving her own rich language with biblical referencing into seamless, rhythmic and poetic sections that are truly affecting.
There is great depth and compassion here that will leave you with thoughts and impressions long after lights down.
Sarah uses Biblical quotes and words, at least some with poignant connotation such as obedience, surrender, submit and fear! Such choice of language underpins the absolute autocratic control that religion of so many persuasions brings to bear on our most basic of human needs, to love and be loved unconditionally.
Her vocal and musical delivery were smoothly controlled and she easily commanded our attention for the duration of her hour long performance.
Sarah concludes on an affirmation of hope.” The best is yet to come!” I liked that and I liked her.
