The story of Cinderella begins, but does not continue in its usual way. Instead, the story is interrupted by other well-known fairytale characters, none of whom can get on with their usual business. Determined to get to the bottom of the problem, the characters discover that the Reading Tree, the central part of their world, is dying. The Reading Tree is powered by children in the Real World reading, and with that happening less and less, the Reading Tree is losing its magic.
While most of the characters are determined to fix the problem, the villains realise that if everything goes back to normal, they will go back to losing over and over again. They make a plan to conjure a real world child, but when the one who arrives adores reading, they are foiled yet again.
