This version of the show aims to keep the fun and spirit of the original version alive, with lots of colourful characters and an exciting, adventurous plot, while updating some of the elements for a modern audience.
Even a hundred years later, children often wrestle with the idea of what they’re supposed to be and struggle to reconcile that with what they really want. It’s all too easy to just conform to what others want, especially when we don’t know who we are ourselves. We want the message of this show to be about being true to yourself, and the only thing you need to before each other is kind. This is the lesson that Wendy teaches Peter. The story is also about bravery. Peter claims to not be afraid of anything, and John thinks to be afraid is to not be a man, but through the characters of Tiger Lily, Wendy, Tinker Bell and the Mermaids, the boys learn that being afraid does not make you weak, and asking for help doesn’t make you lesser.
Key note: The outdated and racist depiction of the ‘Indians’ in the original play has been eliminated in this version. They’ve become female warriors, and Tiger Lily is another character who defies expectations to be true to herself.
